Meet Maria

As part of our Women in Engineering Series we met with Maria, Manufacturing Quality Engineer.

For nearly 5 years I’ve worked as a Manufacturing Quality Engineer in Convatec´s manufacturing site in Michalovce - a small town in the eastern part of Slovak Republic. My awesome team and I focus on the production of catheters – we handle quality control in production, compliance etc. I am also taking part in different projects, such as being responsible for risk assessments and ensuring there will be no negative impact on product or process.

It was more of a coincidence for me - throughout my childhood I wanted to be a Doctor, as I wanted to help people but I didn't like to sit and memorise things. Throughout my life I really enjoyed Math, so I went on to study Applied Mathematics for solving of crisis situations and then become engineer in emergency planning. It is a very happy coincidence!

The most exciting project I am working on right now is related to sampling and inspection during production. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about data collection, statistical principles, ISO standards and better understand our production processes. But I also see it as opportunity to simplify work of production personal by focusing only on what’s important.

Passing FDA inspection without any observations in my area of responsibility.

The people I work with and Convatec provides a lot of opportunities to learn.

I believe that everyone has a unique point of view and way of thinking, which is helpful when finding solutions – which is an important part of engineering. With a career in engineering you’ll look at the bigger picture, whilst also covering a lot of areas and issues at once. This is very important, especially in quality engineering, where you need to put together information from different areas while keeping in mind all SOPs and standards to be able to make decisions that will not affect patients or compliance. It’s an exciting and worthwhile career!
